JOHN SQUIRE’S ‘CELEBRITY’ PORTRAITS

This will definitely come as a relief to our daily bombardment of celebrities.  ‘John Squire: Celebrity’ is a series of some of the artist’s latest works.  Most people know him for his work with the Stone Roses, but not too many have seen his work outside of record sleeves.  Though he has been at it quite a while, this new exhibit looks quite tasty.

In his latest collection, Squire has used ancient symbols to illustrate the abstract likeness of those ‘larger than life’. According to Squire;

“It’s a brief respite from the endless bombardment of celebrity images. It asks: How often do we really need to see copies of complete strangers’ faces, and why do we collectively choose those particular people?”

The museum’s website states that the exhibit is interesting in how it examines modern Western society’s idolisation of celebrity culture has devoured our traditional symbols of salvation and replaced them with new gods.

Squire was fascinated by the use of the eight pointed star in traditional Islamic works, because by focusing on the repeated patterns and geometry, it was to keep one from any way of idol worship. This is the basis for his latest collection he says;

“I applied this concept to the gods chosen by modern Western culture; those whose stories have been told and retold and whose images have been mass produced to such an extent that they are granted a kind of immortality”

Believe us, after looking at some of these pieces, you will never look at Woody Allen, Richard Pryor or David Beckham the same again. Amazing!

‘John Squire:Celebrity’ opens in London on June 10 at the Idea Generation Gallery.
